Flower Arranging

May 4, 2016

“I made some flowers for friends to smell,” a child proudly announced as he placed his work on a table. Arranging fresh flowers is a new and exciting practical life work in the preschool classroom. This work typically comes out later in the school year as it involves several steps and skills. The children have already practiced arranging artificial flowers as well as filling a pitcher, pouring water with a funnel and cutting.

Children need to be surrounded by beauty in order to appreciate beauty. As guides, we can point out the beauty in our everyday surroundings. In a Montessori classroom, the children are taught to care for their environment. While developing an aesthetic sense, the child has the opportunity to carry out an act of kindness. Thank you to all the preschool families who have supplied our classroom with beautiful, fresh flowers.

“The child should live in an environment of beauty.”

- Maria Montessori
