Pre-Primary: Learning about the World…
The globes came out on the geography shelf; they are intriguing as a part of our birthday circles, a representation of our earth and of course because they are shaped like the geometric solid, the sphere. The most common question around the globe (not including asking for help to get the globe back on the stand) is “where are we?” The children understand that we can find the area we live in on our globe. They have the language that we live in Maine and perhaps know the city we live in, many identify the orange continent as the continent we live on.
Recently, we introduced a large atlas of the world. On each page is a continent with images of the landscape, landmarks, animals and produce. The children pour over each one, excited by the discovery of elephants and giraffes in Africa and Mount Rushmore in North America. They may not remember all of the names of places, but they begin to understand that the world is a vast and varied place full of differences and similarities and they are excited and curious about all of it!
