Kindergarten Enrichment

At Pine Grove, a kindergartner is defined as a child who turns five prior to October 15th of the school year. While younger students are resting, kindergarteners from each classroom come together for a special daily enrichment hour led by one of our Montessori-trained lead teachers.

This time is thoughtfully designed to extend each child’s learning through meaningful, engaging experiences. Lessons are guided by the children’s interests and curiosities, while remaining grounded in Montessori principles and academic intention. Educators observe the group closely and design activities that are both responsive and purposeful, allowing children to explore topics in depth while developing key skills.

An emphasis is placed on language development and handwriting, often incorporating elements of the Handwriting Without Tears curriculum in a hands-on, developmentally appropriate way. In addition, the enrichment program offers a wide range of experiences that may include creative arts, sewing, dramatic play and theater, grace and courtesy lessons, and opportunities for leadership and collaboration. Children may also engage in meaningful group projects, such as creating and selling handmade goods or food items to raise money for a charity of their choice—an experience that builds both practical life skills and a deeper understanding of community contribution.

Kindergarten students also have unique opportunities to take on greater responsibility within their classroom communities. They serve as role models and mentors to younger peers, helping to foster empathy, confidence, and a sense of belonging.

The kindergarten year is a meaningful and important culmination of the Montessori early childhood experience. It is a time when children deepen their academic skills, strengthen their independence, and grow into confident, compassionate leaders within their environment.
