"To let the child do as he likes when he has not yet developed any powers of control is to betray the idea of freedom." Dr. Maria Montessori, The Absorbent Mind
Freedom within limits is a perennial topic of conversation in Montessori circles. The popular Montessori phrase, follow the child, is often misconstrued by some who take this as permission to let a child do whatever they please. But Montessori guides know this to mean that we, the adults, must follow the child's development, interests, needs, and abilities, while providing guidance and structure. The child does not have free reign in a Montessori classroom from day one. They first must show that they have the ability to follow rules and routines and act with grace and courtesy towards their fellow classmates and teachers. Once a child has demonstrated that they have internalized these rules and routines, then that child is allowed to freely explore the classroom and make independent choices. Children thrive when their environment is consistent, predictable, and suited for their developmental needs. This can be applied to home life, as well! Below, please find the most recent AMS Family Connection Article, Love, Order, and Limits, which discusses how families can create home environments that provide children with the stability they need to grow and gain their independence.
