The Power of Letting Children Do Things Themselves

Dr. Maria Montessori had many (so many!) quotes about the importance of encouraging independence in young children. A favorite Montessori quote here at Pine Grove about independence is: "The greatest gifts we can give our children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence". This calls to the important work our classroom communities are currently doing during the first weeks of school. Teachers are guiding the children towards independence by instilling routines and expectations such as caring for one's personal items, getting dressed to go outside, choosing work materials and returning them to the proper place when completed, and so much more. As this foundation is built, we begin to see exciting signs of independence emerge in the children. Suddenly, it seems, they are quite capable of managing themselves throughout the school day and need the adult a little less than the day before.

We strongly encourage parents to promote independence in the home, as well, and involve children in chores and family routines. Please enjoy the following article from Montessori Parenting, The Power of Letting Children Do Things Themselves, and reach out to your child's teacher or Pine Grove administrators if you are looking for guidance to bring more independence to your child's life
