Preschool: Play Dough Snow People

Play dough has become a staple in the art area of our classroom. We have observed this material to be soothing for many children. There are many fun tools to use with play dough to refine fine motor skills, including rolling pins and cookie cutters. This week, we introduced the children to using their hands to make balls with play dough. We added white play dough to the art area with a bowl of assorted materials to make tiny “snow people”. The children are strengthening their hands and expressing their creativity by decorating their “snow person” with buttons, beads, tiny hats, pipe cleaners and scraps of fabric.

This work generated many sweet conversations and discoveries. The children were overheard giving names to their “snow people” and telling stories. Some children were seen making families of “snow people” and “snow animals”. The possibilities are endless.

“Imagination does not become great until human beings, given the courage and the strength, use it to create.”

― Maria Montessori
