Kindergarten: Montessori Extensions

Extensions are a great way to breathe new life into Montessori materials that the children have mastered. Recently, two six year-old children who have mastered identifying the Geometric Solids from the Sensorial area extended their study by going on a “Geometric Solid scavenger hunt” around our classroom. They discovered that the colored globe from the geography area matched the sphere, that the Brown Prisms matched the rectangular prism, and the Colored Cylinders matched the cylinder. When they couldn’t find something to match a Geometric Solid, they built a match using Magnatiles! Both children displayed a lot of excitement and interest as they explored the classroom on their hunt, demonstrating that by extending this work their interest in the classic Montessori materials remains strong.

"The role of education is to interest the child profoundly in an external activity to which he will give all his potential." Maria Montessori
